Pakistani security forces achieved a major counterterrorism success on Tuesday when they neutralised 14 terrorists in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) conducted in North Waziristan’s Datta Khel area, according to military’s media arm Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). ISPR revealed that these militants were linked with Indian intelligence services and orchestrating attacks against both security forces and civilians in North Waziristan.
ISPR stated that its operation was launched based on credible intelligence regarding a heavily-armed terrorist network operating from a hideout near the border region. When they were encircled, terrorists opened fire on advancing troops causing an intense firefight lasting several hours which saw all 14 militants eliminated along with weapons, explosives and communication equipment being recovered from their hideout.
ISPR reported in a press release that those neutralised were members of a group who were receiving financial and logistical support from hostile foreign intelligence agencies – most notably India’s Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). These individuals had recently carried out attacks targeting security convoys, military check-posts, peace-promoting tribal elders.
Pakistan Army’s statement highlighted how this successful operation forms part of their ongoing efforts to root out terrorism from Pakistan, particularly areas where militants have tried to regroup. They stressed that “Pakistan’s Armed Forces remain fully committed to eliminating the menace of terrorism, and any attempt at destabilization that threatens peace from within or external sources will be dealt with firmly,” as per ISPR statement.
Sources in the area have reported an upsurge in suspicious activity, with several incidents of IED attacks and cross-border infiltration attempts reported over recent weeks. Residents who had become increasingly alarmed at their security situation reportedly felt relief at its successful execution.
Political and defense analysts have highlighted that foreign intelligence agencies’ sponsorship of cross-border terrorism is a serious threat to regional stability. “Using proxy forces against neighboring countries could further exacerbate tensions,” warns retired Major General Ghulam Mustafa. Pakistan has repeatedly raised this issue at international forums; these operations provide evidence of this reality on the ground.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will raise India’s involvement at the UN and through other diplomatic channels, in an attempt to alert global powers that there may be attempts by external powers to compromise Pakistan’s internal security.
ISPR concluded its statement by offering tribute to those soldiers who took part in a high-risk operation and asserting that Pakistan stands united in fighting terrorism. They added, “Their sacrifice will not go in vain”, adding that any attempt at undermining Pakistan’s peace or sovereignty would be met with firm resolve.
